LUIGI SPAZZAPAN

OPENING: Wednesday 23 April 2025 6 p.m.

from 24 April to 10 May 2025

Biasutti & Biasutti gallery is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Luigi Spazzapan (b. Gradisca d'Isonzo 1889 – d. Turin 1958), one of Italy's early pioneers of abstractionism and informal art. Between 1911 and 1913, he traveled several times to Vienna in unsuccessful attempts to gain admission to the Academy of Fine Arts. His artistic education was further enriched by journeys during his youth to major centers of visual culture, including Vienna and Munich. These experiences allowed him to absorb and develop his artistic vision including styles such as Art Nouveau, Futurism, and eventually Abstractionism. In 1928, he moved to Turin, where he met art critics Lionello Venturi and Edoardo Persico. From 1929 to 1932, he aligned himself with the ideals of the "Six of Turin" group, which enabled him to cultivate a highly personal style, leaving a profound mark on the informal art movement. Luigi Spazzapan's creativity and graphic skills led him to work as an illustrator for publications such as Gazzetta del Popolo, L’ Illustrazione del Popolo, and Il Selvaggio. In 1931, he held a solo exhibition of ink drawings at Galleria Il Milione in Milan, followed by another at Galleria June Europe in Paris the next year. He participated in the 1935 in the II Quadriennale di Roma and was invited to the XX Venice Biennale in 1936. His work was showcased in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad, including the 1954 Venice Biennale and the 1955 Rome Quadriennale, where he had two solo displays. Spazzapan passed away suddenly in Turin on February 18, 1958.

The exhibition features twenty-one works created between 1929 (Natura morta, frutta e tovaglia a quadri) and January 1958 (Tempera n.2), providing a comprehensive overview of his artistic journey. The 1930s are represented by pieces like La lettura in poltrona (1933) and Il Valentino d’autunno (1934), while the 1940s include Fiori e foglie in composizione (1946), Studio di fiori geometrici, Pesci e teste (1947), and Fiori primaverili nel vaso (1948). Claviere and Figura di donna were created between 1950 and 1952.
