FELICE CASORATI E CARLO LEVI. PAINTERS AND FRIENDS

From  24 October 2013  to 21 December 2014

Biasutti & Biasutti gallery is proud to present Felice Casorati e Carlo Levi. Amici pittori. which celebrates two of the major protagonists of the Italian and Turinese painting scene. The exhibition, curated by Francesco Poli, features works by the Italian painters and friends Felice Casorati (1883-1963) and Carlo Levi (1902-1975), highlighting the relationship of deep friendship between the two painters and examining the period between the beginning of the 900 till the Sixties. During the Twenties, Turin was a lively centre of culture thanks to the presence of personalities as Edoardo Persico, Lionello Venturi, Antonio Gramsci and Piero Gobetti. It was this latter who introduced Carlo Levi to Felice Casorati and to his school, around which revolved the avant-garde painting in Turin. Felice Casorati, with a rigorous search for constructive and formal soundness (see Study for girl, 1920) will guide the young Levi in his first artistic activity (see Dolls, 1920, Figure with newspaper, 20s), making him participate at the Biennale in Venice in 1924 and encouraging him to go to Paris to further his knowledge of art (Place de la Concorde, 1928).

From 1930 onwards, Casorati painting becomes more emotional, entering a refined color palette, see works such as Girl in the study, 1932-33, Girl sitting (Girl waiting), 1933. Levi will dedicate himself not only to the celebration of still lives (Still Life, 1930; Vase with Flowers, 1933) but also to portraits, which are one of the most frequent subject in his production. Not only within the family, but also portraits of eminent personalities as Italian and foreign politicians and intellectuals, for example, Figure 1929; Figure (portrait of man), 1937; Portrait of Paola Olivetti, 40s.

The exhibition is completed with significant works of the '40s, '50s and '60s: Casorati, Feet of gypsum (Still Life with casts), 1940 ; The Three Sisters, 1947, and Eggs and the city, 1949; Levi, Still life, (Rabbits), 1965.
